Animal Crossing Insect Codes

Fruit, furniture, friends, the three Fs. What else could you possibly need?

Any fan of the Animal Crossing series knows that an important part of the game is catching, collecting, and selling bugs. From the common and harmless butterflies to the rare and dangerous scorpions, there are many insects and creepy crawlies to catch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and good reasons to do so. In Tom Nook's store in Animal Crossing, the player can choose to ask for and say passwords for items. This was meant as a way to share and send items if the player and their friend can't meet each other in person. However, codes were released online and became an easy way to get rare items, such as golden tools, gyroids, and even fish and bugs. Players are only able to tell codes up to 3 times.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is finally here. As of the 20th of March 2020 we can finally dive into the wonderful world of escapism that only Nintendo's slice of life game can truly deliver. So, grab your Nintendo Switch and hop online... Actually, wait a minute. As with most Nintendo games - even its mobile offerings, like Mario Kart Tour - access to Ronnie Rando, Arbitrary Anne and friends is gated behind a friend code system.

So, we here at Pocket Gamer have a solution for you. Especially those who are truly embracing the spirit of adventure. We've built this post to give you a chance to gather a great list of new friends to play with.

Of course, there are other ways to have others play on your island. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has console-sharing mode when you have multiple users on the same device, however, everybody will - at present - have to bundle onto the same island... which certainly destroys the thrill of exploring a new land. Otherwise, there is a local play option where one person hosts and others can ping in.

So, how do you get your friend code in order to share it in this handy-dandy post?

  • Step one: Tap on your profile icon in the top left of the console.
  • Step two: Tap 'add friend'.
  • Step two-and-a-half: Voila! Your code will appear beneath your username.
  • Step three: Share your code with your Pocket Gamer friends below if you'd like to.

Are there any alternatives though?

As it turns out, there is. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons there are also Dodo Codes which are single-shot codes to create lobbies. Grabbing those is quite simple: just head down to the Dodo Airlines building, tell Orville that you want visitors from far-off islands, and read through the mass of warnings from Nintendo about being mischievous

At this point, you can grab the five-digit Dodo Codes by opting to not invite from your friends list. You can also share those below, but be aware that you're in a comment thread and so responses may not be immediate.

So, leave your friend codes and Dodo codes in the comments below -- as well as which native fruit you have on your island -- and why not tell us what you think of Animal Crossing: New Horizon too?

And, of course, while you're here. Feel free to check out our quick Q&A post for Animal Crossing: New Horizon tips & hints, and if there's anything you think we've missed or any questions you still have, pop them below and we'll share all of the info we have.

Design codes are different from the QR codes that come from previous Animal Crossing games.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players can create their own designs and patterns that can be used as clothing, artwork, and more. Players can also share these creations with the world through special Design Codes that can be entered in the Custom Designs Portal in the Able Sisters shop.

These Design Codes are different from the QR codes that were generated in past Animal Crossing games, like Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Instead of scanning a QR code using your mobile device, you can add these new patterns to your game by using each design’s special code.

If you find a design online that you want to add to your New Horizons account, just follow these steps to add it to your game!

Before we begin, though, there are few requirements to keep in mind. If you want to add these patterns to your game, you need to have the Able Sisters shop unlocked, and you must have a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Finally, you must be connected to the internet (even if temporarily).

Head into the Able Sisters shop and interact with the Custom Designs Portal at the back of the store.

Select “Access the kiosk.” Your Switch will connect to the internet.

If you want to search for an individual design, select “Search by Design ID.” If you want to search for a creator to view all of their designs, choose “Search by Creator ID.”

For this guide, we’ll show you how to download this Mimikyu Hat shared by Instagram user kyutii_arts. Since we’re looking for just the hat, we’ll select “Search by Design ID.”

Type the code for the design or creator you want to find, and then select “Confirm” or press the “+” button to enter it.

If you entered the code correctly, New Horizons will show you the pattern and allow you to save it. Select “Save.” Please note that if you searched for a Creator ID instead, you'll see a menu with all of that player's available designs, and you can select the one you want to save.

The Custom Designs app on your Nook Phone will open, allowing you to save the design to one of your design slots. Move your cursor to the slot you want to use and press “A” to select it.

Select “Overwrite it.” to save the design to that slot.

And that’s all there is to it! The design will be saved to your Custom Designs app, and you can use it just like you would any other custom design in the game.

Have fun!
